The Importance of Kidney Health

This month for our LET'S EAT community dinner and discussion, the topic is one that is in dire need of being addressed in urban impoverished areas. Right alongside the storage and plasma centers that exploit the financial devastation of these places, is a growing number of fringe market enterprises under guise of healthcare.

Dialysis Centers. A strange phenomena to sweep across a city, state and country surely.

Behind the curtain of what we see is a dark and harsh reality...that we like to bury down deep and cover up pretty.

We are really, really sick.

What is Dialysis?

Dialysis is the  process of filtering the blood as the KIDNEYS would do inside of the body. There are two types of ways that this cleaning takes place. HEMODIALYSIS and PERITONEAL dialysis.

In hemodialysis inserted catheters move the blood outside of the body to go through a machine where impurities are stripped away and the blood is returned back.

In peritoneal dialysis, a fluid solution is put in the abdomen that stripes away impurities as blood filters through the capillaries of the stomach lining and is then drained away.

Both of these "treatments' require drastic alterations in the life and habits of the patient who now spends up to 12 hours each week taking on a job that the body, had it been properly known about and maintained was well equipped for.

The Kidneys.

Under your rib cage to the right and left of the spine, are two of the most important organs when it comes to eliminating and keeping your blood clean. Kidneys also play a part in your bone health. When the kidneys are failing, blood is not being cleaned leading it to become toxic.

When the kidneys are normal and in proper function, they are constantly producing enzymes and proteins while moving fluids and waste out into the bloodstream to be carried away from the body. This same process and motion is what regulates our blood pressure.

Before we get to the stage of dialysis and kidney failure, most sustain some sort of kidney damage. Often this looks like issues with blood pressure and heart ailments.

In fact, the two most common causes of kidney failure, are hypertension and diabetes. (Both type I & II) Obesity, high cholesterol and smoking also disposition you for kidney troubles.

The kidneys fail in five stages progressing up to end stage level 5 where the kidneys have the lowest level of filtration.

Caring for your Kidneys

One of the most surprising things to realize coming down from the processes of dialysis is that the solution that patients spend 12 hours each week connecting to a machine for it to filter through them, is nothing more than good WATER!

Dialysis solutions are made up of purified waters, glucose (sugar), and electrolytes (electrically charged minerals). That simple!
You can serve yourself and your kidneys well by making sure you are doing this simple task daily...

DRINK MORE WATER!

At the very least, it is really important that you are drinking half of your weight, in ounces of water each and every single day.

According to the U.S. Renal Data System, one year of hemodialysis can run up to $72,000 a year while peritoneal dialysis can cost about $53,000! Prices that put an increasingly valuable alkaline water system to shame. Choose your investments!

EAT ALKALINE FOODS!

Alkaline foods are whole foods that don't leave behind acids that need to be cleaned up behind. This allows your kidneys to not have to work so hard and cuts down of the amount of waste in the body in general. Look for ways to incorporate bio-minerals foods into your lifestyle on a regular basis. Your spirit and body will surely thank you!
